Luxury hotels in Norway: all 16 MICHELIN Key hotels, and how to choose

The best luxury hotels in Norway are the 16 that hold a MICHELIN Key for 2026. Two have two Keys: Storfjord Hotel above the Storfjord near Ålesund, and Walaker Hotel in Solvorn on the Sognefjord. If you can only choose one, choose one of those two.

Keys are judged on architecture and interior design, service, personality, value for money and what the hotel adds to its local setting. That favours small, owner-run places in the landscape over big city chains, and Norway’s list shows it: nine of the 16 are in Fjord Norway.

The 16 at a glance

Room counts are from the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel pages, Storfjord’s own site and Fjord Norway. Where none is given, see the hotel’s own site.

Two Keys: the best of the best

1. Storfjord Hotel, near Ålesund

Thirty rooms across four buildings made of whole logs, on a hillside above the Storfjord and facing the Sunnmøre Alps. The MICHELIN Guide notes that every room has a balcony with a view. Dinner is a local four-course menu by the fire, and you can ask for dinner in the boathouse on the fjord or in a lavvo in the forest. There is a small wellness area with an outdoor jacuzzi.

Our verdict: The most complete luxury stay in Norway. Book at least two nights.

2. Walaker Hotel, Solvorn

Norway’s oldest family-run hotel, welcoming guests since 1640. Its 22 rooms are spread across four buildings, the oldest of which, Tingstova, dates from the 1630s. A set four-course dinner with wine suggestions is served at 19:30 every evening.

Our verdict: Pick it for history and a slow evening, not for spa or nightlife.

Fjords and mountains

3. Hotel Union Øye, Hjørundfjord

At the end of the Norangsfjord, under the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, Union Øye has welcomed adventurers since 1891, and royals, writers and explorers have stayed here. It has 38 rooms. Rooms in the main house are period-style, while the newer suites in turf-roofed farmhouses are plainer and more Nordic. In the Queen’s Suite there is a bell to ring for champagne.

Our verdict: The most romantic hotel on the list.

4. Juvet Landscape Hotel, Valldal

Nine glass-and-wood rooms in a forest gorge, about an hour and a half’s drive from Ålesund. In summer you can also come from Åndalsnes over the Trollstigen road, about 40 km. The Bath House spa looks over a bend in the river, and dinner is served communally. If you have seen the film Ex Machina, you have seen Juvet.

Our verdict: Go for the architecture. Book weekends early, as availability is limited.

5. Elva Hotel, Voss

A riverside design hotel in Voss, with a main building and five mini-houses looking over the lake and the landscape. Fjord Norway sums it up as a place where design, nature and outdoor activity meet, so pick it if you want to be active by day.

6. Hotel Brosundet, Ålesund

A family-owned boutique hotel in a historic warehouse on Ålesund’s central canal. It is the only Key hotel in the middle of a town in the west, so it works well as a base without a car.

Islands and the coast

7. Lilløy Lindenberg, Herdla

New for 2026. A four-room farmhouse on a private island at Herdla, outside Bergen. The last ten minutes of the trip are by boat, and the food is plant-based and foraged.

8. Beckerwyc House, Bekkjarvik

Also new for 2026. An island-village stay in the Austevoll archipelago, in the house that is also home to Mirabelle by Bocuse d’Or winner Ørjan Johannessen, which won a MICHELIN Star in 2026. Bekkjarvik is about 50 minutes by boat from Bergen.

Check boat times from Bergen to Bekkjarvik for your date.

9. Manshausen, Steigen

Seven larch-and-glass sea cabins on a small island in Nordland, next to an 1880s main house. The MICHELIN Guide lists rates from NOK 5,600 per night in high season. Take the express boat from Bodø to Nordskot, 1.5 hours, and the hotel collects you by boat.

Our verdict: The most memorable arrival on the list.

10. Nusfjord Village & Resort, Lofoten

New for 2026. Historic red rorbuer in one of Norway’s oldest fishing villages, on Lofoten’s south coast, with a spa, galleries and a restaurant. The House of Dahl is the resort’s most exclusive place to stay. The Isolated Fisherman is a private cabin a short boat ride away.

Food first

11. Eilert Smith Hotel, Stavanger

Twelve rooms in a 1930s functionalist building, above RE-NAA, one of Norway’s two three-star restaurants. Heated floors and Nespresso machines, and within walking distance of most of central Stavanger. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels.

Our verdict: Book the room the day you get the dinner.

12. Boen Gård, Kristiansand

A restored estate by the Topdal river outside Kristiansand, with 16 rooms in the old barn and granary and two apartments in the farmhouse. The restaurant uses produce from the farm, and guests can fish for salmon.

Our verdict: Pair it with dinner at Under in Lindesnes.

In the cities

13. Britannia Hotel, Trondheim

Dating from 1870 and reopened in 2019 after a three-year renovation. Its 233 rooms have Hästens beds and Carrara marble. Guests can use the spa and indoor pool, and the hotel’s Speilsalen has a MICHELIN Star. The wine collection runs to about 2,000 labels.

14. Sommerro, Oslo

250 rooms in the 1930s former head office of Oslo’s electric company. There is a restored 1932 public bath, rooftop pools and bars, and Plah, a Thai-Norwegian restaurant.

15. Amerikalinjen, Oslo

122 rooms in the 1919 head office of the Norwegian America Line, by Oslo Central Station at Jernbanetorget 2. Gustav is the hotel’s jazz club.

16. Hotel Continental, Oslo

Oslo’s classic grand hotel, across from the National Theatre. It has been family-owned for four generations and is home to Theatercaféen.

Also worth a look

The Thief, Oslo: a lifestyle hotel on Tjuvholmen, opened in 2013, with a spa, rooftop and car service. It does not hold a Key.

Panoramahyttene, Karmøy: three cabins by HOLON arkitektur on bare rock facing the North Sea, new in the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection for 2026. Each has a wood-burning stove, a sleeping loft and a terrace.

How to choose

  • One night, best of everything: Storfjord Hotel.
  • History: Walaker or Union Øye.
  • Design: Juvet or Manshausen.
  • Without a car: Brosundet, Eilert Smith, Britannia or the Oslo three.
  • Food trip: Eilert Smith with RE-NAA, or Beckerwyc House with Mirabelle.

Start with Storfjord or Walaker, then add a city hotel for a dinner. Read our luxury travel guide for experiences and our list of Michelin star restaurants in Norway. Norwegian readers can use our version for Norwegians.
