The Norwegian film Sentimental Value (Affeksjonsverdi) has received unusually broad recognition from the Golden Globes.

The film went in with eight nominations, the highest number ever for a Norwegian film, making it one of the most nominated titles at this year’s ceremony.

Even before the evening was over, one thing was clear. Stellan Skarsgård won the award for best supporting actor for his role in the film. It is the first time a Norwegian film production has received a Golden Globe, and it marks a clear international breakthrough for the project.

The film is directed by Joachim Trier, who is also nominated for best director and best screenplay, the latter together with Eskil Vogt. “Sentimental Value” was also nominated for best drama film and best non-English language film.

The cast also received wide attention. Renate Reinsve was nominated for best actress, while Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas were both nominated for best supporting actress. Altogether, it is a rare picture of a Norwegian film highlighted in almost every major category.

Ahead of the ceremony, it was pointed out that the film could in theory win in all eight categories. Although it did not take every award, the combination of the nominations and Skarsgård’s win is clear proof that “Sentimental Value” has reached a level few Norwegian films have come close to before.

The film has already been selected as Norway’s official Oscar entry, and the Golden Globe result adds further weight to its continued international release.

All the Golden Globe categories “Sentimental Value” was nominated in

  • Best non-English language film
  • Best director – Joachim Trier
  • Best screenplay
  • Best actress – Renate Reinsve
  • Best supporting actor – Stellan Skarsgård
  • Best supporting actress – Elle Fanning
  • Best supporting actress – Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas
