On stage, it’s glitter and long dresses. At home, her outfits have to suit life with a small child. This Monday, Maria Mena gives us a peek into her wardrobe and shares the styling tip that gives her confidence.

With her first live album Perspective out and a Norwegian tour starting in November, Maria Mena has plenty to celebrate in the year she turns 40 and marks 25 years as an artist. We talked to her about wardrobe favourites and this autumn’s trends.

Practical every day, glitter at work

Life with a small child clearly plays a part when Maria chooses her clothes. She wants to be both stylish and practical, and has an eye for colours that go together. That shapes her own definition of her style.

– My style depends on the setting. I care about being cool and practical in everyday life – I have a son! I need certain colours to match, like belt and shoes, and I love dressing tone-on-tone. But for work, it’s glitter, long dresses and glamour.

Shoulder pads give confidence

Maria’s best styling tip is a small detail that can do a lot for your silhouette and look.

– Shoulder pads! Instant confidence. IBEN sells a pair you can attach to your bra! Thank me later, she says.

One trend she’d happily skip

When it comes to this autumn’s and winter’s trends, she has a strong suspicion, without necessarily cheering about it.

– I think we’ll see UGGs. Do I think we should see UGGs? No, but I think we will.

And we think Maria is absolutely right that the streets will be overflowing with UGGs this year, like every other year!

Her favourites right now

In her wardrobe, there’s one jeans shape in particular that she keeps coming back to.

– Right now it’s all barrel jeans, in every colour! And my croc blazer from Envelope!

If we were to borrow one thing from Maria’s wardrobe, we’d start with the blazer. And perhaps sneak off with a pair of shoulder pads. Thank you for the peek, and good luck on tour, Maria!
